Just bought my first bike in 15 years (or more!). I just hated mine so I never used it, and decided that the Gym in nice summer weather is no fun at all! So I hope to stay active and healthy this summer by adding biking to my activity list. I have a friend Craig that bikes a lot, he may even let me join him on one of his long rides, if I can keep up!

I went for a Hybrid bike: mix of mountain and road bike. It’s got straight handle bar for comfort, some parts normally used on mountain bikes (deraillers) but it is light, and has road bike wheels and tires to be more efficient on the road.

I also really liked the idea of Disc Brakes, which I got with this package. What I bought is the TREK Valencia, pictured below. It does not have a suspension, but my friend Craig did not recommend it to me and I will not miss it since I never had one ;)  So I am very happy with what I got. Here it is:

it is not a hybrid between a road bike and a mountain bike. it is nothing like a mountain bike.

derailleurs are on ALL kinds of bikes, especially road bikes. by hybrid they mean its half a road bike and half a commuter bike. its geometry is closer to the ground for better turning

You are right that it has not a whole lot in common with an all out mountain bike (MTB). What I meant by associating the MTB type with the derailleur(s), was not tha fact that it had one but rather that the components selection are from the MTB line from Shimano (Deore LX in this case) which are not found on road bike lines. Also the shifters are borrowed from the MTB line from Shimano.

Some other hybrids of the same type (Canondale BadBoy) can actually accept MTB wheels and tires to go off road in trails. Of course, we are not talking downhill riding here, more like trekking.
